Vanuatu Radio producer and course participant, Leni Kanas, from VBTC, volunteers to have her blood drawn, then smeared onto slide for scrutiny under a microscope by fellow participants at the local hospital's malaria research laboratory.
The 5-day course was held in February, - the time of year when malaria carrying mosquitoes multiply rapidly, finding small pockets of clear water left behind by the season's numerous rain storms - many residents living in this region will not be as lucky as Leni.
Along with the classroom activities, guest speakers, and knowledge quizzes, the participants had the opportunity to examine and identify malaria parasites under a microscope.
There was also a field trip to a local village with a lively discussion with local residents. Malaria and other local health concerns were discussed and debated.
The workshop's TV participants are going to use the footage and interviews, recorded during the week, to make a documentary about Malaria in Vanautu. |
