First HM training course in the Caribbean

By Colin Lloyd

We held our first Health and Media in-country training course in the Caribbean, in Port of Spain, Trinidad from February 26 to March 2, 2007.

I was joined by our co-director and health expert, Angela Dawson, from the University of Sydney, who assisted in the training, the organisation, and the facilitating. Jas Dhariwal, the training manager from the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, based in London, did most of the pre-course administration including the organisation of the out-of-town participants.

Along with the usual in-class activities, throughout the week we had no less than five field visits:

1. The San Fernando Hospital, where the spoke with head doctor, Dr Riccardo Mohammad, who fielded questions and showed them around the facility.

2. The Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) where Director, Dr. Glenda Maynard, and other staff members gave presentations and fielded questions from the participants.

3. The South AIDS Support Group where they met with the group’s Director, Grace Mohammad.

4. The Cyril Ross Home where Ms Hyacinth Cross and Medical Doctor Dr David Everest Omoigbinomwanhia both gave presentations.

5. The Caura Chest Hospital where Matron, Mary Alexander gave a presentation and showed the participants around the facility.

Along with three participants from the host country, Trinidad, there were representatives from seven other Caribbean nations:

Felix Henderson, Dominica Broadcasting Corporation
Shelton Daniel, Radio St Lucia
Sonia E Stewart, CVM Communications, Jamaica
Michelle Arthur, Caribbean Broadcasting Corp, Barbados
Betty Anne Lazarus, Grenada Broadcasting
