First Health and Media in-country training course in Asia
Bangladesh participantsColin Lloyd,
Course Trainer

On Thursday, 1 December, 2005, two years after the first Health and Media course was introduced in Tanga, Tanzania, and after nine more courses in as many African countries, we completed our first Health and Media course outside of Africa - in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

TV, radio, and print media professionals gathered for the 5-day practical workshop that began with an opening speech from the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. course outline

In addition to the usual in-class activities, the participants had a chance to get out of the classroom as field visits were organised to: The National TB Association of Bangladesh, a community healthcare facility, and an urban "slum" area, where journalists had the opportunity to find out how much local residents knew about HIV/AIDS, TB, and other health concerns.

On Wednesday Evening, all the participants gathered for an informal reception organised by the British Council. Other guests included health and development executives, local media academics, and the British High Commissioner,

Anwar Choudhury.

On the final day, after the group presentations, the Director of the British Council (Dhaka), along with myself, presented the course completion certificates. After lunch, we said our "good bys"...

Thankfully, our courses do not end when we leave the country. Our newest colleagues will now become a part of our Health and Media community. I look forward to their contributions to both the listserv and our website.

In addition, our newly formed partnership with the Dhaka based, Health and Environment Journalists Forum, promises to yield further projects, ideas, and development.
